Chemwetich – successfully treated

Dr. Clemens, a German anthropologist who works in the Pokot region, a very remote area in northern Kenya, met the severely burned girl first. Half of the scalp was missing, and the wound was severely infected.

Dr. Clemens could not help but find out if there was something that can be done to help the girl. At this point TULISA came into play.

Tulisa has raised 15,000 euros, for a series of plastic surgeries that were required to restore Chemwetich.

The girl had bravely endured the shame to live like an outcast for more than 6 years. She endured profoundly dehumanizing living conditions more than any other child her age. For her there was neither health care nor education.

A relative, an uncle took her to Nairobi. She was rushed to hospital where the chronic head wound was treated before the first operation could be performed. Her uncle introduced himself as an interpreter because the girl speaks and understands Pokot only.

As the uncle could only be available for a month, communication became a greater challenge given the fact that Chemwetich would soon be without a translator in Nairobi. Therefore she received a crash course in basic Swahili. A private teacher was hired. For three hours every day he came to the hospital to teach Chemwetich in Swahili. After the wound was prepared, and in good condition, several plastic surgeries were performed. Particular problems were experienced only with the thin skin formed on the skull, which repeatedly broke up. This eventually led to an extension of Chemwetich’s hospital stay by two more months than planned. This increased the cost of the treatment considerably.

At one point we were concerned that after several years with chronic wounds of the scalp, had possibly formed cancer cells. Fortunately, the performed biopsy did not confirm this suspicion. We all are still convinced that she has a good prognosis.

On behalf of Chemwetich, TULISA thanks all donors who have made her treatment possible.
